Peania, 7 September 2023 – Lavipharm, a long-time supporter of MDA Hellas, the Association for the Care of People with Neuromuscular Diseases, is participating as a sponsor in the online event that will take place today, September 7, 2023, at 17:00, organized in the framework of the 10th World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day (WDAD).

This year’s event, entitled “Duchenne: Breaking Barriers”, will focus on highlighting the latest developments in the field of treatments and in particular gene therapy, and managing the key social, educational, and workplace challenges faced by people with DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy). Barriers to accessibility and care, as well as possible ways to circumvent them that aim to achieve full participation for people with DMD in social life and all its facets, will also be discussed.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disease that affects an average of 1 in 5,000 newborn boys worldwide. The disease is caused by errors in the dystrophin gene, the longest gene in the human body, and affects the mobility, heart, and respiratory system of patients.

Lavipharm, serving its mission to develop and deliver science-driven medicines and self-care solutions that enable people to live healthier and longer, supports actions that contribute to disseminating information, raising awareness and to improving quality of life.

A few words about MDA Hellas:

MDA Hellas, Association for the care of people with Neuromuscular Diseases (NMD), was founded in Athens in January 2000, with the aim of improving the living conditions of its Members. NCDs are rare diseases, mainly of genetic origin, affecting the muscular system. The severity and clinical presentation varies between the conditions. Many lead to the use of a wheelchair while others do not. Today, more than 1500 families are registered in MDA Hellas nationwide, some of which have more than one member who is ill.

MDA has not received any government subsidy throughout its entire history. Hence all the activities are implemented sponsored by private initiative.
